British Foreign Office has added eleven new nations to its public warning roster regarding the risks of industrial alcohol toxicity from contaminated spirits.

This revised advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "a global increase in the number of documented incidents" of methanol poisoning.

Just a few weeks ago, officials had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, in response to multiple serious events such as the deadly death of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being warned that even tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can result in permanent eye damage or death within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Employed?

Industrial alcohol is a toxic substance often used in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. It is not intended for ingestion.

While it is generated during the manufacture of beverages, licensed producers lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the distillation process.

However in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to save money, and because it is tasteless and smell-free, it is very difficult to identify.

Government Recommendations for Travelers

Authorities representative Hamish Falconer stated that every traveler should recognize the signs of toxic alcohol contamination.

"When you are consuming alcohol in foreign countries, choose well-known venues and steer clear of homemade alcohol or free shots," the official said.

"In case something appears suspicious, for example a hangover that's way worse than normal or sight issues – contact a doctor right away."

The entire register of destinations listed as posing a risk of toxic alcohol toxicity presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
