Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation Head James Comey Submits Innocent Plea to Accusations of Lying Congress

Previous FBI director James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to making false statements to US legislators and impeding a legislative process.

His lawyer filed the answer acting as his counsel in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

His attorney stated he would seek to have the case dismissed for multiple factors including that his client, a detractor of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

Mr Comey was indicted shortly after Donald Trump pushed his top legal official to proceed against him.

Judicial Process

In court on Wednesday, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald told the judge they planned to present various petitions to throw out the case before a trial, claiming the legal action was vindictive and that a US attorney was improperly assigned to take over the case.

Mr Comey's case was first managed by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under pressure from the former president after his investigation into an additional rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to file indictments.

Courtroom Atmosphere

James Comey seemed in positive mood as he entered the legal venue on mid-week, chatting with his legal team and sharing humor. He was joined by his spouse, his wife and child Maureen Comey, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration terminated.

Upon hearing to the court recite his constitutional guarantees and the pair of allegations against him in court on Wednesday, Mr Comey was inquired if he understood the allegations.

"Yes your honour. Appreciate it," he told the proceedings.

Historical Information

Mr Comey was the FBI Director from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about four months into the former president's initial presidency as president. At the time, Mr Comey was overseeing an examination into international campaign influence and whether there were any links between Moscow and the election effort.

During his tenure, the director caused a backlash from the Democratic party when he announced just shortly prior to the national vote that he was investigating Democratic candidate the candidate's use of a personal email system. Charges against Clinton were not pursued, leading to criticism from the Republican party as well.

Present Charges

The federal government allege James Comey provided false information to Congress during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he deceived the Senate by saying he had not approved someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to release to journalistic entities information about the FBI investigations.

Government lawyers also charge the defendant of "corruptly endeavoring to affect, block and impede" the legislative group by giving misleading testimony to it.

Individual Responses

Through a recording James Comey posted to his online platform after he was accused, he stated he was not guilty and accused Trump of behaving like a "autocrat".

"We have known for considerable time that there are ramifications to standing up to the former president," he commented. "We choose not to live on our kneeling."
"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "Thus initiate a legal proceeding."

The charges against James Comey surfaced after Trump shared on online platforms demanding his top legal official, Pam Bondi, prosecute Mr Comey and additional individuals.
