Bungie's Challenged Shooter Project Marathon Is Making a Comeback

The upcoming sci-fi extraction shooter, the studio's highly-anticipated game, has made a reappearance with the news of a closed technical test scheduled to begin in October.

A Rocky Development Journey

First announced during the 2023 gaming showcase, the game has experienced a bumpy development cycle. Last fall, Bungie announced plans were to begin alpha testing during the coming year. A period of silence followed, until the project was showcased again in spring with a Sept. 23 launch date. However, following initial testing resulted in mixed reactions, Bungie revealed during summer that it was postponing the game's launch.

Avoiding Past Mistakes

Though the title has already seen its portion of controversies, the development team appears determined to ensure Marathon avoids the same outcome as other games. Now, it appears the game's development is moving forward again, as they just revealed that it has conducted multiple private tests to collect player input on Marathon" since this past summer. The studio is expanding access, allowing additional participants to get an early look of the game via an forthcoming "closed technical test."

Exclusive Testing Information

Considering it's a closed testing phase, it's understandably limited access than, for example, an open beta. To participate in the exclusive trial — which runs from October 22nd to October 28th — participants must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Apply via their platform
  • Live in supported regions
  • Own a PlayStation 5, Xbox console, or Windows PC (system requirements include an compatible CPU, supported graphics card, and sufficient memory)
  • Join their community platform
  • Complete confidentiality agreement via the online community

Application Process

Applications are open now, and to be eligible for the private trial, applicants must submit their application by the October 16th deadline. Players on Windows PC can also submit their application via the digital platform starting on Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. PDT, with Steam applications due by October 26th. Bungie will notify selected participants and inform them of the next steps.

"This represents a crucial milestone for us as we evaluate enhancements since the game's Alpha, including three maps, several character options, proximity communication, re-tuned combat pacing, solo queue, deeper environmental storytelling, and more," Bungie said. "However, the current version is a development build and will only include a portion of what's intended for the game's full release, concentrating on the initial gameplay moments."

Additional Information

Additional details about the technical test and the actual experience can be located on Marathon's support section. But for individuals who don't qualify for the trial (or don't have time), there's still good news: Bungie says a official announcement on the project's status is the next thing on the schedule once the test is over.

"We'll be sharing a comprehensive report on the game's progress in the coming months after the Closed Technical Test!" The studio announced.
